Geodes are spherical to subspherical rock formations with an internal cavity lined with mineral material. The outer layers are usually a harder material such as microcrystalline quartz that is less susceptible to weathering and protects the inner cavity. The internal cavity most commonly contains agate banding, quartz crystals, or calcite crystals but more rare mineral assemblages can occur.
